Now THAT’s a good question!

If the Fort Hood attack was an Islamic terrorist attack on American soil — to be somehow blamed on President Obama — then wouldn’t the DC Snipers also qualify as an Islamic terrorist attack on American soil? And if so, wouldn’t that completely contradict the Republican boast that Bush “kept us safe” since 9/11? The DC Sniper shootings happened in 2002, about a year after 9/11.

Imam Akmal M. Muhammad of the Islamic Freedom Foundation: “Same sex marriages, if allowed, will lead to the extermination of the human race because there is no procreation.”

Of all the stupid arguments against gay marriage (and believe me, they are all stupid), this is the biggest forehead-slapper. I’M not getting gay married. YOU’RE not getting gay married. About 200 million Americans aren’t getting gay married. How exactly will this lead to the extermination of the human race?

Fucking moron.

  1. Wingnut writes book alleging that Muslim groups are trying to infiltrate Congress and the White House with “intern spies.”
  2. Wingnut publishing house publishes the book.
  3. Wingnut congresspersons get copies of the book.
  4. Wingnut congresspersons send official request for investigation to Sergeant-at-Arms.

What’s next? An official investigation into the presence of pod people in the halls of Congress? How about lizard men from the center of the Earth?

I mean, why not? As long as we’re entertaining fucking stupid-ass conspiracy theories…

UPDATE: Okay, it appears they have NOT actually submitted a formal request. Why not?! What are they waiting for? What about the horrible national security threat we face from the swarthy, bearded Muslim hordes?

Religion and movie sequels

humor, movies, religion Comments Off

Found somewhere on the web:

See, the Torah is the first one and the New Testament is the sequel. Then the Qu’ran comes out, and it retcons the last one like it never happened. Sure, there’s still Jesus, but he’s not a main character anymore. In fact, the messiah hasn’t shown up yet at all.

Jews like the first movie but ignored the sequels. Christians think you at least need to watch the first two, but the third movie doesn’t count. Muslims think the third one is the best. And Mormons liked the second one so much they started writing fan-fiction that doesn’t fit with ANY of the series canon.

Religion, uncontaminated by power, can be the source of a great deal of private solace, artistic inspiration, and moral wisdom. But when it gets its hands on the levers of political or social authority, it goes rotten very quickly indeed. The rank stench of oppression wafts from every authoritarian church, chapel, temple, mosque, or synagogue – from every place of worship where the priests have the power to meddle in the social and intellectual lives of their flocks, from every presidential palace or prime ministerial office where civil leaders have to pander to religious ones…

My basic objection to religion is not that it isn’t true; I like plenty of things that aren’t true. It’s that religion grants its adherents malign, intoxicating and morally corrosive sensations. Destroying intellectual freedom is always evil, but only religion makes doing evil feel quite so good.

The difference

Grow up in Hawaii, raised by your grandparents, you’re “exotic, different.”

Grow up in Alaska eating moose burgers, you’re a quintessential American story.

If your name is Barack you’re a radical, unpatriotic Muslim.

Name your kids Willow, Trig and Track, and you’re a maverick.

Graduate from Harvard Law School and be President of the Law Review, and you are unstable.

Attend 5 different small colleges before graduating, and you’re well grounded.

If you spend 3 years as a community organizer, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a Constitutional Law professor, spend 8 years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, become chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee, spend 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of 13 million people while sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs committees, you don’t have any real leadership experience.

If your total resume is: local weather girl, 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, 20 months as the governor of a state with only 650,000 people, then you’re qualified to become the country’s second highest ranking executive.

If you have been married to the same woman for 19 years while raising 2 beautiful daughters, all within Protestant churches, you’re not a real Christian.

If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your disfigured wife and married the heiress the next month, you’re a Christian.

If you teach responsible, age appropriate sex education, including the proper us e of birth control, you are eroding the fiber of society.

If, while governor , you staunchly advocate abstinence only, with no other option in sex education in your state’s school system while your unwed teen daughter ends up pregnant, you’re very responsible.

If your wife is a Harvard graduate lawyer who gave up a position in a prestigio us law firm to work for the betterment of her inner city community, then gave that up to raise a family, your family’s values don’t represent America’s.

If your husband is nicknamed “First Dude,” with at least one DUI conviction and no college education, who didn’t register to vote until age 25 and once was a member of a group that advocated the secession of Alaska from the USA , your family is extremely admirable.

And spare me the bullshit about how Obama is running for President and Palin is not. Remember, it was the wingnuts who wanted to compare Palin’s accomplishments to Obama’s. They opened the can of worms. They have no right to bellyache about it when people find out that Obama’s record clearly beats hers.

Religion is a replacement for “shit happens” and often used to try to explain away bad things that happen that we can’t control, and even tragedies that could be prevented.

To me, it is far more comforting that random bad things happen randomly to random people than to believe there is some sort of sadistic, psychotic super being making it happen according to some plan that we can never understand.

Being under the thumb of an unpredictable and unknowable god is far more troubling than the idea of just being left to our own devices.

Bottom line, the only ones who think Obama is a Muslim are the historically illiterate who believe America and its Founding Fathers were primarily Christian. They were not and America is not. If you think otherwise you are wrong. Regardless of fussing or fuming or pervasive lies, the United States Constitution was a product of the Humanist Enlightenment. The single reference to the deist ‘Creator’ in a separate document (Declaration of Independence) is not proof of a Christian nation. Those who believe this belong to the same intellectual demographic that believes the income tax is illegal.

John McCain announced that he was running for president to confront the “transcendent challenge” of the 21st century, “radical Islamic extremism,” contrasting it with “stability, tolerance and democracy.” But the values of his handpicked running mate, Sarah Palin, more resemble those of Muslim fundamentalists than they do those of the Founding Fathers. On censorship, the teaching of creationism in schools, reproductive rights, attributing government policy to God’s will and climate change, Palin agrees with Hamas and Saudi Arabia rather than supporting tolerance and democratic precepts. What is the difference between Palin and a Muslim fundamentalist? Lipstick.
